Leaks

We understand that a leak on your property can be stresful and costly. While we dont carry out work on private pipework, thjere are ways that we can help.

What to do if you have a leak

If you know that you have a leak on your property, your priority is to get the leak fixed as soon as possible. A leak can cause more than water damage, it can also affect your property structurally. The longer a leak is allowed to run, the more damage it can cause, as well as increasing your financial liablity. A qualified plumber should be employed to make the repairs required.

Please do keep us posted if you discover a leak on your property.

How can Guernsey Water help?

  • We can check our records for any piepwork diagrams on your property.
  •  We can let you know how much water is being lost as a result of the leak.
  •  We can turn your supply off to prevent further water loss and damage.
  • We can, if criteria are met, provide a leak allowance.

What to do once the leak is fixed

Once the leak has been repaired, please contact us, we will take a meter reading to calculate how much water has been lost due to the leak. This will be useful if you apply for a leak allowance.

Guernsey Water's Leak Allowance Policy

To help alleviate the pressure of a high water bill following an unexpected leak, we offer leak allowances based on the following:

  • The leak must have been underground and undetected.
  • An allowance can only be considered once the leak has been fixed.
  • Customers will only be allowed to apply for a leak allowance going back two quarters before their current bill.
  • The repair must have been carried out within 30 days of you becoming aware of the issue.

Please note, only one leak allowance is permitted per occupancy of the property involved. If you decide not to apply for an allowance, you can:

  • Contact your insurance and ask whether they cover loss of water
  • Apply for a wastewater only allowance
  • Arrange a payment plan with Guernsey Water
