Planned Road Closures to Reduce Disruption During Major Sewer Works
Guernsey Water have been undertaking a series of short road closures as part of preparation for major sewer works later this year.
The works involved investigating the condition and details of the below ground system, allowing engineers to identify the full extent of works ahead of the main construction phase later this year. Carrying out this investigative work in advance helps ensure the later works can be completed more quickly, with fewer delays and less disruption overall.
Undertaking the main works in the summer months should mean a lower chance of weather-related disruption.
The closures took place in Rue Du Friquet, La Baissieres, and Les Ozouets.
Guernsey Water’s sewer infrastructure is typically deeper than other utilities, in some locations reaching up to seven metres below the road surface. Without advance investigation, unexpected obstacles can be discovered during major works, leading to stop‑start working, extended closures and delayed reopening of roads.
By carrying out trial trenches and pilot holes now, engineers can fully plan the main works later in the year, reducing the risk of overruns and ensuring roads are reopened as quickly as possible.
The works form part of preparation for rebuilding sewer chambers and assessing the condition of existing sewers. Proactive maintenance reduces the risk of future collapses, which would cause far greater and unplanned disruption.
Capital Delivery Manager Carl Falla said:
“We know that closing a road twice can sound worse than closing it once, but in reality, it’s the opposite. Doing this investigative work now allows us to plan the main works properly, avoid unexpected delays, and keep the later closure as short and predictable as possible. It’s about reducing overall disruption for everyone.
“We recognise road closures cause inconvenience and thank residents and businesses for their patience while these essential preparatory works are carried out.”
The next planned closures for these roads will begin in late summer, and notice will be given nearer the time.
