Islanders keep water use in check during hot Bank Holiday weekend

Guernsey Water is thanking islanders for their efforts to conserve water during the recent spell of unusually hot weather, after demand remained below last year’s peak levels despite soaring temperatures.

According to the Met Office, temperatures reached 30.8°C yesterday, following several days of unseasonably warm and dry conditions. As expected, water use increased over the Bank Holiday weekend - but not to the levels seen in comparable heat last year.

On Monday, 15.2 million litres of water were supplied, the first time daily demand has exceeded 15 million litres since July 2025. However, this remains below last year’s peak of 15.4 million litres, despite similarly high temperatures.

Demand over the weekend was also elevated, with 14 million litres used on Saturday and 14.2 million litres on Sunday. Average summer demand typically sits at around 13.5 million litres a day.

In total, water use across the three days was approximately three million litres higher than average, a modest increase given the exceptional weather.

Guernsey Water says the figures demonstrate that islanders are continuing to respond positively to messaging around water efficiency.

Guernsey Water Operations Manager Jon Holt said:

“This is exactly the kind of weather where we would expect to see significant spikes in demand, so to only exceed 15 million litres once over the course of the weekend is really encouraging. It shows people are thinking about their water use and making small changes that collectively make a big difference.

“Every drop counts and the actions people have taken over the past few days really show how much of an impact those small decisions can have.”

With further warm weather expected, Guernsey Water is encouraging islanders to continue taking simple steps to reduce unnecessary water use. These include reusing paddling pool water on plants, collecting water while waiting for showers to warm up, and using eco settings on dishwashers where possible.

Although current water reserves remain in a healthy position, Guernsey Water says continued awareness and responsible use will help maintain supplies through the summer months.
