Guernsey Water encourages sensible water use as second heatwave begins

Guernsey Water is encouraging islanders to use water wisely as the island enters its second heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to rise significantly over the coming days.

Guernsey Water is not asking islanders to reduce their water use, but is encouraging people to be mindful of how water is used during the heat.

Guernsey Water Operations Manager Jon Holt said:

“When temperatures rise, so does demand, and that means we draw more from storage. That’s exactly what our reservoirs are there for. Simple, sensible actions taken by thousands of customers can overall make a real difference, ensuring that the reduction in storage levels is as low as possible.”

Guernsey Water is encouraging people to take straightforward steps to improve water efficiency, such as:

  • collecting water while waiting for showers to warm up and reusing it
  • using paddling pool water on gardens
  • watering plants in the morning or evening

Average summer demand is around 13.5 million litres per day, which rose to approximately 15 million litres per day in the last heatwave.

Guernsey Water will continue to monitor demand and provide an update at the end of the week.
