Fort George Outfall Repair Moves a Step Closer

The replacement section of pipe needed to repair the Fort George outfall has now been fabricated and transported from Brickfield House to the harbour.

The new section will be installed by Guernsey Ports’ dive team, but due to the challenging location and tidal conditions, the work can only take place during a narrow tide and weather window.

Guernsey Water has also been working closely with the Office of Environmental Health & Pollution Regulation to secure the approvals required for the installation.

A date has not yet been set, but it is hoped this will be within the next few weeks.

The repair follows the discovery earlier this year that the outfall was no longer discharging in its intended location. Since being made aware of the issue, Guernsey Water has worked closely with Guernsey Ports’ dive team to inspect the damaged pipe, before removing it. A new pipe was fabricated to the exact dimensions of the old one.

Guernsey Water Capital Delivery Manager Carl Falla said:

"Moving the replacement pipe into position at the harbour is a significant step forward and means everything is now in place for installation when the right tide and weather window becomes available.

“This has been a complex repair in a very challenging environment and would not have been possible without the support and expertise of Guernsey Ports’ dive team – without them this work could not have been completed this year.

“Once the replacement section has been installed, we will increase the frequency of inspections on this outfall so that any future issues can be identified and addressed much sooner."

An update will be provided once the work has been completed.
