Deadline for clearing streams approaches

Guernsey Water is reminding Islanders with streams, douits and other watercourses on their land that by law they are required to clear them of weed, silt and other obstructions by the 15th June.

Jon Holt, Guernsey Water's Operations Manager, said: "With approximately 165km of streams and douits around the Island, the clearance is vitally important in ensuring we are able to effectively capture as much water as possible to top up the Island’s stored supply, and reduce potential flooding.

“We have just experienced the warmest Spring on record, and the fifth driest since records began. Weather conditions in general over recent years have been incredibly variable, so doing anything we can to help the Island through both unusually dry or unusually wet periods is more important than ever.

The utility works in partnership with Parish Douzaines with the twice-yearly aim of ensuring streams are properly maintained.

Mr Holt added: "Although the inspections undertaken by Parish Douzaines following the clearance deadline often go unseen, they continue to benefit the Island community as a whole and we thank them for their continued cooperation."

For advice on the law and responsibilities, landowners are advised to contact their Parish or Guernsey Water.
