Managing Wastewater

Guernsey Water is responsible for managing how wastewater in Guernsey is treated and returned safely to the environment, and we do this by monitoring the water catchment area, ensuring sustainable wastewater treatment is in place, and eliminating inappropriate discharges.

As an island which is famous for its extensive coastline of popular beaches, it is essential that we protect bathing areas from wastewater discharges to ensure that the bathing water quality is as high as possible. We can do this by monitoring our CSO's (Combined Sewer Overflows - pipes that discharge storm water to sea during periods of heavy rain) to ensure that inappropriate discharges are eliminated. We have already carried out extensive work in identifying leaking/overflowing cesspits which create pollution in streams, which would eventually end up in bathing waters if we did not intervene.

A Guernsey Beach

To measure our performance in this area, we monitor bathing water quality samples to see just how clean our waters are. The results recorded over the last few years have been predominantly good, which demonstrates that the work we have carried out has been successful. However, further work is still required to raise quality levels even higher.

Guernsey Water comes under the watch of the Director of Environmental Health & Pollution Regulation in terms of all receiving waters, which provides additional focus and guidance for us in terms of managing our impact on the environment.
